While the PS5 is an excellent all-round entertainment box, it may not be your best bet for streaming apps like Netflix and the recently re-released Disney +. This is because the power draw when using your new-gen system is significantly higher than a dedicated device, like a Chromecast or Apple TV. And with many of us keeping a close eye on our energy usage, either for financial or environmental reasons, this seems like sound advice.
According to research from FlatPanelsHD, as shared by Eurogamer.net, a PS5 uses about 70 to 80 Watts while streaming, compared to just 2.5 to 3.2 Watts on a Chromecast or 3 to 4 Watts on an Apple TV. That comparison gets even more unwieldy, around 90 to 95 Watts, on an original PS4. It goes without saying that using consoles to watch your favourite shows is ultimately going to cost you more than a low-powered alternative.
It’s also worth mentioning that the experience is arguably not as good on a PlayStation, with output often forcing HDR where it’s not natively supported and a lack of framerate matching, which can lead to some video stutter. Furthermore, the PS5 notoriously lacks support for Dolby Vision or Atmos, which is a big bugbear for fans.
Now, obviously we’re not suggesting you delete your Netflix and Disney + apps: if you’re only spending a few hours a week watching shows on your consoles, it’s unlikely to be cost effective to go out and buy a Chromecast instead. But in this era of absurd energy prices, it’s absolutely worth keeping in mind.

I find it humorous that a Playstation site is saying don't use your Playstation for something.
I fully understand why and obvious points are made, but at the end of the day we need to look at our failed leadership here in the west. That's failed leadership across the ENTIRE west. Focusing on green energy so hard that they forgot that current green energy still requires fossil fuels enmasse.
Obviously Russia is to blame for a lot of this but just think... if America hadn't gone full nuts opting to destroy our energy independence, we could actually have been selling our energy resources to Europe while Russia cuts them off.
At least Italy is making a comeback in some ways.
I only use my streaming services (and YouTube) through my Apple TV 4K. That was the only reason I got it, besides AirPlay with my MacBook, which is absolutely rad.
I'd say as long as you're not using an RTX 3090 or 4090 for video streaming, it's not a huge dealbreaker, though. I've heard some horror stories about those.
Edit: I just looked up the power consumption for my good old Wii U I've been using over the weekend, and it's amazing how efficient it is for such old PowerPC- based hardware. Makes me feel much better about diving into more Pikmin goodness this coming week.
“ PS5 is an excellent all-round entertainment box”
nah , no it’s not . the ps4 does what it does while using less power & had more features that the ps5’s still missing
all for a lesser price & cheaper bill
Nice PSA for people who may never think about such things. I've probably used my PS4 more than my PS5 for streaming but PS5 is currently my movie disc player for the rare occasion I borrow a disc from the library. At least I save money borrowing stuff for free. Nice game selection there as well.😁
Some data:
80watts an hour
8 hours of steaming a day
365 days in a year
34p per kWh
= £79.43 over a year
Not trying to be pro or con just adding context.
@This_Guy I like how you have put that ,made it plain and simple for ppl like me ,thank you
How about Xbox it uses 57w a hour ?
@Uncharted2007 How can you expect to go green if you dont invest. In the Netherlands the energygrid cant handle to power because they never invested in the powergrid.
Company get tax cuts when using a lot of power and never invested in going for the greener option or powersaving why should you.
The normal household gets to pay extra for power while Googles datacentre gets subsidised energy and gets tax deduction.
You cant blame the US for everything we should have had a backup ages ago and i cant say i disagree on Europe because whats happening in the Oekraïne isnt up for debate its horrible.
Whe never invested and went for the cheap option and now we have a big problem.
@This_Guy Not with these prices now.
@Flaming_Kaiser I was going off the government cap for 2022. I do not claim to be an expert on current UK prices. If you have different/better data on the current average kilowatt hour price please share it.
@Flaming_Kaiser Let's use good ol' California (CA) as an example here. CA leadership signed into law that they will no longer allow the sale of fossil fuel (gas) vehicles. Only electric vehicles will be sold by some year... maybe 2030. Less than a month later... a MONTH, the residents of CA are told to NOT charge their electric cars because their power grid can't handle it. So what do they do the next month? They sign a bill to outlaw gas heaters in homes.
Absolute MORONS are in control of CA. The rest of western leadership is NOT far off.
@This_Guy Here in the Netherlands people got prices from €300 and it went to €1200.
@Flaming_Kaiser €300 per kWh? Or €300 was the monthly bill?

I use my PlayStation 5 only for gaming. I have a smart tv to stream, why have 2 devices on when you only need one
@Flaming_Kaiser Google says the average kilowatt hour in the Netherlands is €0.312. Do you agree?

@This_Guy Monthly thank God and still there a people who cant afford to put in the heath or shower. Its so bad people dont have money left to eat a normal meal and kids go hungry to skool its a big issue here.
@nomither6 common ps4 w 🫡🤣🤣
@BeerIsAwesome It’s a fair point, I’d never actually thought of it like that.
I sometimes use my PS5 to stream because my Roku tv can be slow!!
I usually stream from my TV, it's like 5 years old and only cost about £300 back then, surprising that smart tvs aren't everywhere by now.
Though I do listen to music videos on YouTube through ps5 sometimes because of the headphone socket in the controller.
Come to think of it I only watch YouTube videos. It's bout the only app I got installed. I barely watch movies or series and whatnot.
Don't give a crap about the environmental effects of using a games console when there's people flying round in their private jets lol
No Atmos means I've never used the PS5 for streaming and the couple of times I have started up Netflix colours seem off, and I am using a HDR screen. Clearly not Sony's focus this time around. It's a change from PS1 being many folks first CD player, same with PS2/DVD and PS3/Blueray. Clearly it does not have the same advantage in todays market where streaming devices are cheap and built in to most things.
@nessisonett It does make you wonder if Italian history books don’t cover anything beyond 1921. Or maybe not enough of the electorate has seen Amarcord. That giant Mussolini head is quite the scene stealer.
the forced HDR and no Dolby vision or Dolby atmos are the biggest reasons
its a poor option to use
@Would_you_kindly I dont fly a private yet but it wont hurt me to think about what im using and try to be less wastefull.
Less long showers, close the door, put the heat lower, less airtravel it saves me money and it doesnt hurt me to just think about what om doing.
Im not such a ass to say i dont care because i only think about myself. Better look at yourself then someone else i cant change the other person but i can change things for the better for myself.
@This_Guy I the end i saw that the bill went way up i cant say how much it is i need to check my contract.
I have a couple of those firestick things I use, but even with the PS5, streaming just a couple of hours a day would cost approx £25 a year?
I've had my PS5 since day 1 and I've never once used it for streaming anything.
My TV has 4 dedicated buttons on its remote control, Netflix, Disney plus, Amazon prime and YouTube.
Not taking into account this energy saving info it just so much easier to press one of those 4 buttons rather than faffing about on the PS5.
Don't get me wrong I absolutely love my ps5 but I bought it for one thing and one thing only....... To play Video games
As usual, the leaders punish their tax slaves... In Sweden, our total tax is 54% per month including everything. But still we must be forced to lower our standard of living for the folly of the government.
Freesat box has Netflix and Amazon Prime built in.
For Now and Disney+, the £15 Roku Express is still doing a sterling job and as its power is taken from the TV's USB socket, it barely uses any power.
@BeerIsAwesome Yes, this is actually one of my issues with sub services like Game Pass and PS Plus Extra/Premium. Its encouraging a generation to regularly download thousands of gigabytes of data on a whim. My friend regularly downloads stuff on game pass, plays for 5 mins, gives up and deletes the game before downloading something else. Repeat that across the install base of these systems and how much energy collectively is being wasted.
I just play games on my gaming machines. A stream is where the fish play.
Isn't most smart TVs already released with Netflix and Apple+ ? Why would I use a ps5 for those apps ??
use my smart tv for streaming from you tube etc ,use ps5 for games and watching blu ray films in 4k etc, fantastic console
Gah! My TV's All4 app is part of YouView so needs an aerial (we only have a satellite dish, which is fine for Freesat but YouView won't let you set up without being able to scan for channels), so I frequently use the PS5 as a media box so I can watch everything on one device. I guess I'll have to get used to switching away for anything other than All4, and look forward to having an aerial when I move house (which is taking ages)
Most people now have smart 4K TVs with dozens of app like Now, Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV etc, there is zero reason to be using anything else watch films, TV on apart from your TV one device using electric. Console's are for games in my opinion.
I been gaming since the atari days.and i been with PlayStation since day 1.and i never watch anything on it besides of course playing my video games on it.i had my dvd during my ps2 days.and other PlayStation console.i already got a blue ray .so its all good.word up son
@theheadofabroom Just get a Roku box; Express is about £25-30 and handles up to 1080p. Ours has been very good indeed and includes All 4 (still miffed that they haven't reinstated it on the new Freesat boxes given that they part own the service!)
I think you can get a 4K Roku box for another £10-20 if you want?
Most TVs have around 100-150 W power on full brightness anyway, so another 60-80 W isn't a big deal I think. It's during gaming where the power rises substantially, to around 200 W.
If I watch any streaming service, I tend to use the TV apps as the TV has to be on anyway so I am not running additional devices and thus significantly increasing my power consumption.
@Eagly I fully agree on the nuclear front. If we have responsible, well trained people with a good head on their shoulders, nuclear will be incredible for the world.
On the other topic, America hasn't been united since 2015 when H Clinton decided to call anyone not voting for her "Deplorables". What did the media do? They went along with it and it's spiraled ever since. As of a month ago, if you didn't vote for Biden and his current admin, you're considered an extremist threat to American democracy. When you have a president that calls half the nation terrorists, using the same verbiage that Bush Jr used after the events of 9/11, then you have a severely divided country. Couple that with the current admin weaponizing the federal agencies against political opponents and you have a recipe for disaster.
If I wasn't technically getting my power for free as my energy bill is covered under my rent I would be streaming some other way but as a whole because of the circumstances I use the PS5 for pretty much everything. Gaming, streaming, youtube, I even occasionally watch shows on blurays with it.
I must be the only person that's never streamed on console.
I've always had a dedicated device for that kinda thing because I usually just stream stuff for background noise and I'm not sure I want my PS4/5 or whatever to be on for like 10 hours at a time.
@HeeHo That’s what my AppleTV is for. My consoles are for gaming. The only exception is my PS3 which still to this day makes a DANDY .avi player!
@HeeHo Eh, TBH, the only time I ever streamed on a console was during the Wii days. The motion control was an interesting remote for Netflix at the time. Ever since though, I've had a Firestick of some kind.
Yes but the ps5 plays blu rays and 4k discs and also when psvr2 comes watching movies though the headset with headphones will be amazing.
@sanderson72 I don't really want to have to buy a new thing - the cost and the energy involved in manufacture probably aren't worth it for the period until I move house. I'd also have to juggle HDMI ports again to make things simple for the less tech savvy members of my household.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 just from curiosity, we bought Netflix and Disney+ this month and except smartphones, we installed it into PS5 simply because TV is not connected to internet, SONY 4K player is the slowest thing in the world (even just connecting to internet takes a few minutes and lots of tries) and ps3 cannot run it...
And if we talk about energy consumption... my 650W computer only laughs...
@Uncharted2007 It's called strategy, genius. We buy oil from everywhere else and stockpile ours so that when the inevitable war with China comes, we'll have all the fuel and resources we'll need to grind them to dust.
only reason i watch movies on the 5 is because my movies that i brought when Playstation still sold the movies still want to find another way to watch those please. i use it for 4k blurays etc after adjusting my settings again for movies only on the LG C1
The apps on the tv are way better. And you don’t have to keep switching picture settings all the time!
I don't want to possibly lose all of my accounts' watching histories and bookmarked shows/movies, so I sadly can't afford to do this.
@KidBoruto for at least Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+, and all the UK free streaming services, you just need to log in on another device and all your watchlists and history will still be there.
@theheadofabroom Even if my watching history can be imported, some versions of the Netflix app are missing features.
I know for sure that the Apple TV app lacks the New & Upcoming content tab.
@KidBoruto I can tell you that both Android TV on my Bravia and my partner's Fire Stick have all the features, sorry to hear that Apple TV is lacking.
@theheadofabroom Thankfully I only had to deal with the Apple TV for all of September while living with my friend in Illinois.
So glad to be back home for a few weeks now with my familiar setups etc lol.
@KidBoruto ah, good to hear it was temporary, who would have thought that Apple stuff wouldn't "just work"?
(It me: I've been forced to use a load of their gear professionally and it has given me a deep seated loathing for their software)
@theheadofabroom This is partly why I refuse to ever get an iPhone, I'm perfectly happy with my Samsung Galaxy S21 FE.
